The main causes (situations) of engineering-geological deformation of the railway track in the permafrost zone of the Komi Republic are considered. The set of exogenous processes varies for different natural/geocryological zones. The widest range of exogenous processes is possible in the northern forest-tundra, in the subzone of discontinuous permafrost. To ensure the stability of the railway track in the permafrost zone, it is necessary to organize monitoring observations in order to predict the prospects for the occurrence of engineering and geological risks in both areas with permafrost and areas with thawed soils, as well as to update geocryological maps at all levels of scale. It should be noted that there are two classes of problems related to technosphere safety, which require different analyses of different data sets and, consequently, the improvement of monitoring methods: some are relevant for areas with predominantly permafrost soils, while others are relevant for areas with thawed soils.
