Abstract<\/strong>. <\/strong>Currently, the world lives in a global monetary system based on several reserve currencies, the main distinguishing feature of which is a stable value. The purpose of the article is to analyze the evolution of international reserves in the world monetary systems and to highlight the prospects for their development in the near future. Objectives: 1) analyze the peculiarities of the formation of demand for currency in the long term; 2) outline the preconditions of the historical transition from one dominant «international» currency to another; 3) investigate the structure of the world currency system and international reserves over the past half century; 4) formalize the reasons for the dollar’s dominance in the international currency system and describe the prospects for its alternatives. Hypothesis: the formation of alternative global reserve assets depends on the economic potential of the country and its role in the international arena. Results: In the process of research different historical periods during which different currencies have played the role of the leading world monetary unit in calculations and reserves have been considered. The dominant role of US dollar, opportunities and problems of its closest competitors in the currency basket — euro and Chinese yuan are also emphasized.<\/p>\n
