The article considers the main types of expertise carried out in various types of activities, including those carried out with the application of knowledge from the sphere of land management and cadastres. Three directions of using expert knowledge from the considered area are singled out: 1) in law enforcement and legal proceedings; 2) in land management design; 3) in cases established by the legislation. The target tasks of carrying out these types of expertise are noted. The process of carrying out the state expertise of land use planning documentation is considered in detail, the existing problems are described, and ways of overcoming them are proposed. Special forms of using professional knowledge provided for by the legislation on state land control (supervision) are analysed: involving a specialist, conducting tests and expertise. The needs for expert examinations in the implementation of control (supervision) activities by the Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography are determined and substantiated.
